Flaherty’s Kenpo Karate Black Belts or degrees of Black Belt are the backbone of the association. All black belt members are skilled and come highly recommended in the field of the martial arts. It’s with great honor and respect that they are awarded placement on the FKKA family tree for their over-all outstanding performances, be it with advanced basics and kicks, techniques, forms, weapons, breaking, meditation, multiple attack scenarios, or sparring.

The Junior Black Belt rank and status is designed solely for those between the ages of 8 and 15 1/2 years. Juniors are permitted by Flaherty’s Kenpo Karate and its business owners to wear the Black Belt before qualifying for the 1st Degree Black Belt Test Examination.
Junior Black Belts not only have the privilege of becoming Black Belts at an early age; they are also granted a grace period up to the age of 17 years to test for 1st Degree before their status of Junior Black Belt is removed.
After the age of 17, however, Juniors who decide not to test for 1st degree will be recognized by Flaherty’s Kenpo Karate Association as “Brown Belts” (i.e. Brown/Black Belt or 2nd Brown). To repeat, after 17 years of age students will no longer qualify for Junior Status; nor will they be recognized as Black Belts within our Kenpo Organization. After the age of 17, the Juniors who decide not to test will hold the “brown belt” status until they take our complete FKKA 1st Degree Black Belt Test Examination. Junior Black Belt Graduates will remain with their names on our wall plaque and the KarateToday.com family tree after they have reached 17 years of age and older.
From 1st Degree Black Belt and higher – all graduates will hold their respective ranks and status permanently, without interruption, forever.

Addendum to the previous message:
Our juniors are the equivalent of Brown/Black Belt (2nd Brown) with the added respect that the Black Belt rank implies. Going forward, students who test for the junior Black Belt status must be active members within an FKKA Studio to be recognized as a Black Belt and to receive the benefits of this appointed level. The recognition includes: Being saluted by lower and senior academy members, being addressed as "Sir" or "Ma’am", and, of course, wearing the Black Belt while at any FKKA studio.
Juniors are encouraged to begin preparing for the 1st Degree Black Belt (the start of the official FKKA Black Belt ranks) at the age of 15 or 16. Preparation for 1st Degree will take about 1 year and includes taking private lessons with the Chief Academy Instructors, and if necessary, joining the association and monthly programs. Juniors who withdraw early from Flaherty's Kenpo Karate Association and return for training when they are over 16 (16 ½ to 17) will be required to wear the Brown/Black Belt (2nd Brown).
On the other hand, juniors who return before the age of 16 will have their Black Belt status reinstated with all the privileges and recognition.
The Instructors (teachers) of the FKKA wish our juniors lots of luck and good will in their life’s choices.
